7 World Famous Temples & the Perfect Pilgrimage Getaway

1.    Prambanan Temple in Indonesia

Why it is famous-

•    It is not a single temple, infact aggregation of 240 temples.

•    It is built in the 10th century to dedicate the three great Hindu deities, i.e. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

2.    Stonehenge in England

Why it is famous-

•    It is a kind of ceremonial complex and temple to the dead.

•    More surprisingly, hundreds of human bones were found at the site and showing signs of cremation before the funeral. Interesting, no?

3.    Medinet Habu in Egypt

4.    Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan

Why it is famous-

•    Perched at an elevation of 3,000-feet, It is one of the holiest places in Bhutan.

•    Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche flew onto the cliff on the back of a tigress to meditate here and from which the name of this temple is recognized as Tiger’s Nest Temple.   

Visiting Hours- 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm

5.    Golden Temple in India

Why it is famous-

•    It is a gurdwara, which literally means, gateway to the guru, a place of worship for Sikhs.

•    Surprisingly, more than 10,000 people came to this temple every day.

6.    Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Why it is famous-

•    Largest as well as the oldest temple in the world, Angkor Wat is the biggest tourist attraction in Cambodia.

•    All Cambodians are proud of this temple as it appears on the national flag.

7.    Temple Of Heaven in Beijing

Why it is famous-

•    It is constructed in the 14th century by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty for good harvest

•    The Temple’s architecture is quite interesting: everything in the temple represents Heaven is circular whereas the ground levels represent the Earth are square.
